Education
We are grateful for the many committed supporters at St. Peter's Church and the community. They have made it possible for selected students to attend Secondary School.
Primary education is free but high school unfortunately is not.
Success at secondary school is difficult for our orphans to achieve as they come from the poorest of households with no or little education, large numbers of children, many household chores (which particularly impact the girls), no electricity and little furniture.
The number of children supported has varied according to the funding received by the MAOCP Committee and this has been increasing due to the enthusiasm of our community. Grahame Woods, for example, has been undertaking an annual campaign cycling ‘1000 Miles for Mzuzu’ to raise funds to allow orphans to attend secondary school (see Fundraising).
Initially we provided scholarships for 5 girls and 5 boys to attend local high school. In recent years we have been able to support 20, 10 of each gender.
Children are selected on the basis of their primary school marks, merit and ambition. They are provided with school uniforms, texts, stationary, pens, pencils and an oil lamp and oil, and must pass their year's exams in order to maintain their scholarships. About twenty have graduated to date.
Recently, we were thrilled to receive a donation to provide reading books, dictionaries and text books to support their education (see photo).
A letter from our former project manager;
" I am pleased to inform you that yesterday I bought the dictionaries and
text books for the students. My mini library is getting fat. Praise God!
I am going to distribute the dictionaries to each student tomorrow when
they come for feeding.
Many thanks,"
