Fundraising options:
Where Did We Start?
Fundraising for Mzuzu Children started with a “penny” box within the church. This method allowed
anyone to be a part of the program. A box would be placed in the church where people could walk
by. This method is still used today along with all the other ways to donate.
Donations
The Saint-Peter’s church provides envelopes in which you can enclose a donation. With this method you can receive a tax receipt at the end of the year. A popular way to give donations is through direct deposit on a monthly or annual basis. The Saint-Peter’s Church also has a sponsorship program where individuals can sponsor one child for yearly feeding ($250) or education ($350).
Brooklin Likuni Phalla Program
The St Thomas Anglican Church youth group in Brooklin Ontario raises funds to cover the cost of likuni phala, the specially formulated food that is provided daily for HIV/AIDS affected orphans in the MAOCP program.
Legacy Support
Major support for the program has come from one-time and in-trust donations from members of the community and beyond.
Events
The Mzuzu team has supported many fundraising endeavors which have included both the parish and larger community of Cobourg.
African/Mzuzu Sunday
A popular event is 'African/Mzuzu Sunday' which is held annually in January at St Peter's Church. At this event the activities of the Mzuzu Orphan Program are a focus of the worship service and this is followed by an amazing Soup Lunch put on by the Mzuzu Program Committee members, for all who wish to attend. The funds from this event are earmarked in advance for a specific goal in the program.
1000 Miles for Mzuzu
The fund raising activity '1000 Miles for Mzuzu' was founded by a well-known Cobourg resident, Grahame Woods. In 2011 he pledged to cycle 1000 miles as part of his cardio-rehab and to raise money to support five Mzuzu HIV/AIDS orphans at secondary school. He felt passionate about giving the orphans the opportunity to have a future; he didn’t want them have to drop out of school because of lack of money.
Grahame Woods continues to ride the 1000 miles annually to raise money for the orphans. For more information email [email protected] , please insert your name, address and pledge. Or send it to 1 Coronation Crescent, Cobourg, K9A 1T3, made out to 1000 Miles for Mzuzu.
Kylie Dennis
Kylie started raising money for the Mzuzu orphans when she was 5 years old. She, with the assistance of family and friends has continued each year to raise substantial funds through annual Malawian dinners. She is now a teenager, in high school. Watch for her dinners which are held in the spring
Tea Parties
Women from the community have gathered MAOCP supporter's home for tea and conversation in order to raise funds for MAOCP
Farm visit
A MAOCP supporter and his family opened their property to a community gathering providing tea and sandwiches and the opportunity to see the attractive house and farm.
Yard Sales
A supporter of MAOCP gathered donated goods for many months, and raised funds by selling them at two spring yard sales (see the photo below).
