The Feeding Program
The feeding program improves the nourishment of 250 orphans and about 30 particularly impoverished guardians in Mzuzu Malawi through serving weekly meals. The Mzuzu AIDS Orphan Care Program in Cobourg provides funding to the Orphan Care Committee of St. Marks' Mother’s Union, a group of volunteer mothers, to purchase food and firewood from local markets for preparation of the meals. The meals are designed to maximize nourishment for the children. Since the inception of the feeding program in 2005, the physical condition of the children has improved markedly. HIV/AIDS affected children are fed daily with Likuni Phala, a specially food which specially formulated for those with this disease.
The Program also provides the children with medical assistance and dental care.

The Agriculture Program
The agriculture program was established in 2009 to help improve the nutritional status of the orphans and their guardian families. All guardian families are very poor and thus their own children are often malnourished. The Feeding Program reduces the burden to these families of feeding the orphans that they care for. While all live in urban conditions some do have the opportunity to have small kitchen gardens. With the assistance of the Diocese agronomist families have been taught how to grow and maintain vegetables and fruit trees in order to improve the nutrition of the entire guardian families. The produce can also be sold which increases family income for other household essentials and school fees. The program offers to teach the families the nutritional element of living. They learn the amount of calorie intake that they should be consuming and how to adequately prepare meals. |
Fundraising
The Saint-Peter's church first started raising money for Mzuzu by collecting pennies in a box. Today the church offers a lot of fund raising that helps support the Mzuzu organization. Everything from bake sales to having a thousand mile bike ride. All the money raised goes directly to the organization. |
