Mzuzu Sanitation Report
The sanitation conditions have been inadequate which causes concern for the health and safety of our orphans. Lisa Bailey, a member of St. Peter's Church and recently a member of the MAOCP team, independently raised funds for her latrine project to meet these needs. Working with Dr. Rochelle Holm at the SMART Centre for Sanitation and Water at Mzuzu University, they installed new latrines where needed. Two latrines were successfully built at St. Mark's Church and six at selected orphan"s homes. The orphans also received sanitation training. As more latrines have been requested, Lisa plans to work toward another phase of installation.
Rocket Stoves
Traditionally, in most of rural Africa, cooking has always been done on open fires with pots balanced on stones. This method is inefficient and unsustainable.
Rocket stoves are a simple design using less wood and creating less smoke while generating more heat. John Mead initiated the building of two rocket stoves at St. Mark's Church which have proven helpful for the volunteers who cook for two hundred and fifty children.
